Kevin is a trusted advisor to business and public sector decision makers. His practice focuses on civil litigation, labour & employment, municipal law, land development and regulatory matters. Kevin is Managing Partner of Cox & Palmer’s Halifax office, responsible for ensuring the provision of top quality client service, and also serves on the firm’s regional leadership team. Kevin was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2004. He is recognized by Best Lawyers in Canada 2015 for his practice in Labour & Employment Law, Administrative and Public Law, and Corporate and Commercial Litigation. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Youth Orchestra Canada (NYOC).
Kevin has a broad civil litigation practise that involves commercial disputes, insurance coverage, tort and contract claims. Recent retainers include representing a regional municipality in an arbitration to enforce a settlement agreement with a major service provider; representing a national restaurateur in a franchise dispute; and advising a Nova Scotia steel manufacturer on a claim for business losses resulting from a foundry fire. Kevin’s labour and employment experience includes representation in grievance and disciplinary proceedings before administrative tribunals and the courts. He has a particular interest in wrongful dismissal and the enforcement of non-solicitation, non-competition and confidentiality clauses. He recently represented a senior executive defending breach of confidentiality allegations by a major shipyard. He lectured in Employment Law at the Schulich School of Law (formerly Dalhousie Law School).Kevin is head of the firm’s Municipal Law Group. His expertise includes land use planning and development, by-law challenges, conflict of interest, municipal contract and liability issues. His work includes drafting by-laws, municipal service agreements, recovery of capital cost charges and the regulation of water, waste water and solid waste management services. Kevin is lead counsel to the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities and advises individual units and shared services, agencies on the MGA and other legislation governing municipal authority and action.
