NL - Articling and Summer Program

Cox & Palmer is dedicated to providing a comprehensive education plan for Articled Clerks, which meets and exceeds the standards set forth by the province’s Law Society. We also offer summer employment to first-year law students. Our summer students and articled clerks become familiar with the practice of law by working with experienced senior lawyers. You are provided the opportunity to meet with clients, address client needs and manage complex legal issues. Your experience with Cox & Palmer will allow you to develop the skills to become a competent, successful and satisfied lawyer. Your experience at our firm will be rewarding, collegial and dynamic. 

We will be accepting applications from the following:

  • First-year law students interested in 2016 summer positions
  • Second-year law students interested in 2016 - 2017 articling positions

Application and Interview Process

Representatives from St. John's will conduct interviews at the University of New Brunswick Law School and at Dalhousie University Schulich School of Law in January 2014.  Interviews with students from other law schools across Canada are scheduled in January as applications are received.  Offers for positions at the St. John's office are made shortly after interviews are conducted in January.

Applications should include:

  • Cover letter
  • Résumé
  • Pre-law transcript (official copy)
  • Law school marks (unofficial copy accepted - request official copy when available, if necessary)

Summer Student Experience

Your work as a first-year summer student will be similar to that of an articled clerk but with monthly rotations. Summer students are immersed in ongoing cases and matters and are involved in a wide range of our lawyers’ activities. Each summer student is assigned to two lawyers for each rotation. These mentors will meet with the student on a regular basis and provide guidance throughout the summer.

Articling Experience

The articling year may begin after second year and consists of rotations in which articled clerks spend approximately three months working in different practice areas including: litigation, corporate/commercial, employment/labour, real estate/wills. Articled clerks are assigned a Principal, who is a partner who works with you to guide your articling experience. During each rotation, you are assigned to two lawyers who will mentor you and oversee your assignments for the rotation. The Articling Committee addresses any issues that may arise. While articled clerks receive regular feedback regarding their performance, formal reviews are conducted at the end of each rotation.

Professional Development

The Articling Committee offers a comprehensive orientation and education program for articled clerks. Our focus is on the development of core competencies through education, experience, mentoring, coaching and observation. To ensure that summer students and articled clerks benefit from Cox & Palmer's extensive range of paper and electronic resources, on-going education and legal research seminars are provided to ensure that you learn the "tips and tricks" required to identify issues and research effectively.

Employment Package

We offer articled clerks and summer students a competitive compensation package. Articled clerks receive a benefits package which includes payment of the Bar Admission Course fees, Canadian Bar Association fees and salary continuation while attending the Bar Admission Course.
